The Underdog Project is a NPO and public benefit organisation that brings together marginalised teenagers in at-risk circumstances and abandoned shelter dogs for a little bit of "positive reinforcement". Harnessing the therapeutic power of animals, Underdog tackles social and emotional problems of these teens in a non-invasive way, through practical dog handling activities, humane education and life skills workshops.

Their experiential, innovative programmes not only assist teenagers to experience trust, empathy, responsibility, teamwork, patience and unconditional love, but also help the homeless shelter dogs that we work with by reducing kennel stress and teaching essential skills necessary for rehabilitation and rehoming.

They are based in Hout Bay, working out of the local animal shelter. During after school workshops, teens are paired with shelter dogs, bonding with and training these homeless dogs with the end goal of helping them find and keep forever homes. In the process, teens learn a range of life skills tailored to their group needs, with focus on skills like goal setting, communication, humane education and self esteem.
